Abstract:

The assessment of relationships between satellite-derived vegetation indices and meteorological drought improves our understanding of how these indices respond to climatic changes. The combination of climate data and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) product of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery provided an opportunity to evaluate the impact of drought on land degradation over the growing seasons. The main goal of this study was to investigate the effect of drought on vegetation degradation in Meyghan plain, Arak, Iran. For this purpose, climatic and satellite data were used. The annual Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was calculated for 20 years (1998-2017). Then, the NDVI maps were classified into three classes according to the Tokunaga-Thug method. These classes are: Class 1) no vegetation; class 2) low-density or poor rangelands, and class 3) semi-dense and dense vegetation cover such as agricultural lands. The relationship between the percentage of vegetation cover classes (classes 2 and 3) and the drought index of the previous year was assessed using the Pearson correlation test. The results showed that the correlation between these variables was significantly dependent on vegetation degradation in the poor vegetation area (R=0.51; P-value<0.05). In contrast, there was a negative significant relationship between drought and the percentage of dense areas of vegetation (R=-0.46; P-value<0.06). Hence, it was concluded that the sensitivity of the low-density area (poor rangeland) to drought was more than dense vegetation covers (agricultural lands). Its reason is that the most important source of water supply for natural rangelands is the atmospheric precipitation that has been reduced due to the occurrence of droughts in recent years.

Assessment of Drought Severity Using Vegetation Temperature Condition Index (VTCI) and Terra/MODIS Satellite Data in Rangelands of Markazi Province, Iran

The drought caused a series of effects on many sectors of economy, especially natural resources. During two last decades, Iran has suffered from several severe to extreme agricultural droughts which caused significant decreases in rangeland and agriculture yields. This paper discusses the detection of agricultural drought severity over the rangelands of Markazi Province between 2000 and 2014 us...

Evaluation of land degradation trend using satellite imagery and climatic data (Case study: Fars province)

Introduction: Climate change and human activities have a direct impact on land vegetation. Decreased rainfall and increased temperature are among the climate change factors leading to significant changes in water resources and energy balance in affected areas. On the other hand, human activities such as growing population, overgrazing and land use changes that make change in land conditions, al...

Fractional vegetation cover estimation in arid and semi-arid environments using HJ-1 satellite hyperspectral data

This paper evaluates the usefulness of the hyperspectral imager (HSI) onboard Chinese HJ-1-A small satellite in vegetation mapping. Fractional vegetation cover (FVC) is an important surface microclimate parameter for characterizing land surface vegetation cover as well as the most effective indicator for assessing desertification and crop growth condition. The HJ-1/HSI data were used to calcula...

The effect of meteorological drought on vegetation dynamics in Iran

Drought as a complex ecosystem crisis can affect vegetation density and health. Iran with an arid and semi-arid climate is exposed to this phenomenon. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the effect of drought on vegetation. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of meteorological drought on vegetation dynamics in Iran. In this regard, using MATLAB software, SPEI index with time ...
